Where’s Tyler? The Michigan Maritime Museum

The Michigan Maritime Museum is a complex in downtown South Haven, right on the harbor, that focuses on preserving the maritime history of the great lakes.  They have exhibits ranging from old canoes and motors to coast guard boats to artwork.  The museum even has a workshop where locals get together to build old-fashioned wooden canoes by hand.

The largest, and most interesting attraction that the museum offers for visitors is it’s tall ship, Friends Good Will.  The ship is a replica boat modeled after an actual boat that first sailed in 1811.  It is a magnificent sight to behold in the South Haven harbor, it just looks surreal, a tall, sailed, wooden ship sailing in between all of the new speedboats and seadoos.  The ship sails several times every day and tickets can be purchased at the museum. I suggest a sunset sail if it is a clear day.

I visited the museum for the first time ever a few weeks ago.  It truly does have some great exhibits.  Some of my favorites were the birch bark canoe, the tugboat that is docked on land and can be explored, and the Coast Guard Exhibit.  Inside the Coast Guard Exhibit there were a few boats but what intrigued me the most was a small cannon that was used to fire lines from a rescue boat to another boat that was in distress. It was very interesting. As I wandered from building to building for an hour or so, I had the privileges of watching Friends Good Will get ready and sail out for one of her daily sails in Lake Michigan.

The Michigan Maritime Museum hours are:

Memorial Day – Labor Day
Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm
Sunday 12pm – 5pm

Labor Day – Memorial Day
Friday – Sunday 10am – 5 pm

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3.50 for children.  The museum is located at 260 Dyckman Avenue at the bridge on the Black River Waterfront.

Where’s Tyler? Sherman Dairy Bar

Sherman’s Ice Cream began in 1916 and has flourished to this day.  Sherman’s specializes in making a large variety of hard-packed ice cream that tastes great while keeping prices low.  The ice cream is manufactured in South Haven, just off the highway.  Connected to the factory is the Sherman Dairy Bar, an ice cream shop that serves the freshest Sherman Ice Cream there is!  They offer around 50 flavors of ice cream and a couple flavors of soft serve yogurt during the peak season.

While you can purchase Sherman’s ice cream at any local grocery store, why not head on down to the source to enjoy a cone?  It’s much more fun to hop in the car and head on down to the Sherman Dairy Bar and grab a cone.  It’s very cheap and very, very tasty!

Sherman’s is open from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. Monday – Saturday and Sunday from noon – 11 p.m.

Where’s Tyler? Paddleboarding on Lake Mac

Last year my dad bought 3 long boards that looked a lot like surfboards.  He told us that they were stand up paddleboards, or SUP’s.  My brother and I were both baffled by the idea and wondered how standing on a board and paddling around a river or lake could be fun.  But after a few days of trying them out up at Torch Lake we were convinced that they were definitely worth the money.  Paddling down the many lakes and rivers in Northern Michigan was a blast and I spent days just exploring the rivers whenever the wind was calm enough.  Check out http://www.supsurfmag.com/ for more information about SUP.

I’ve been looking for a place around the area to rent paddleboards so that I can go when I’m not at my cottage and so that I could let others know how much fun it is and this summer while going to Holland State Park I saw a sign that read “We rent stand up paddleboards”.  It was too perfect, I pulled in and walked up to the shop, Macatawa Boat House, sure enough they rent stand up paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks by the hour or day.  The guy working was great to work with and I hopped on a paddleboard and tooled around on Lake Macatawa for a little while.

If you are interested in giving stand up paddleboarding a try, this is the only place in the area that rents them as far as I know. Otherwise, The Outpost in Holland sells many different brands and styles.

The Week in South Haven

Exciting things are happening in South Haven this week!  The National Bluebery Festival kicks off tomorrow and runs through Sunday, and on top of that replicas of the Nina and the Pinta are moored in the South Haven Harbor until Sunday.

The Blueberry Festival is an annual event in South Haven that attracts large crowds to the city in order to celebrate everything blueberry!  There are blueberry cook offs, concerts, a pancake breakfast, pageants, and so much more.  Friday is kids day, so be sure to bring them along for a carnival, blueberry tasting, the Curious Kid’s Museum, and best of all…a blueberry pie eating contest!!!

Over 500 years ago, Christopher Columbus sailed across the ocean with three ships and discovered the Americas. Two of these ships, the Nina and the Pinta, have been replicated and these replicas are moored at the Michigan Maritime Museum as I write this.  Tours of the ships are offered until Sunday, so be sure to stop by and check them out while in town for the Blueberry Festival.

Go exploring like Christopher Columbus and find something new in South Haven!
