Where’s Tyler? Tello’s Bistro

Tello’s is a great restaurant located downtown South Haven.  The atmosphere is very romantic and inviting for a dinner for two or with friends.  Soft jazz music plays overhead while you enjoy the authentic Italian food, made with ingredients from local farmers.  There is an extensive wine list with many wines grown here in Michigan.

I’ve been to Tello’s a few times in the past few years, most recently after helping a friend move into his new place at Central Lofts in downtown South Haven.  We decided to go get dinner and chose Tello’s because of it’s nearby location and great food.  I was feeling adventurous and ordered rabbit for my meal. However, turned out that they were out of rabbit, so instead I ordered the rack of lamb.  The lamb was delicious and the minty pesto sauce on top was superb.  Service was great and the staff was very polite.  We didn’t have to wait for a table at all and the food came very quickly, which was nice.

Tello’s is located on Pheonix St. right next to Dyckman Park in downtown South Haven.  They are open Monday – Thursday 3 p.m. – 10 p.m. and Friday – Sunday 11:30 a.m. – 11 p.m.

Check out the website and make reservations at www.tellobistro.com.  If you are looking for a romantic dinner, or a casual dinner with friends, look no further than Tello’s!

Where’s Tyler? Tunnel Park

Tunnel Park is located just a few miles north of Holland State Park.  It is a popular 22-acre park with a unique tunnel through the dune.  As well as a great beach the park has a dune to climb and run down, a children’s playground, and places to picnic.  At the top of the dune is a nice area to sit and watch a sunset or watch the boats on Lake Michigan.

The last time I was at Tunnel Park was for a going away party for a friend who was headed to Lebanon.  The party was in the evening and we cooked hotdogs and hamburgers on the grills at the park.  Later some of us played football on the beach while the rest of the people sat and talked or threw Frisbees.  It was a nice, clear night and we had a great time relaxing at the park.

Tunnel Park is located at 66 Lakeshore Drive in Holland and is open April 1 through October 31 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Parking fees are in effect during the summer, although you can park across the street for free.

Where’s Tyler? Fricano’s Too

Fricano’s Pizza is the original and most famous pizza in Michigan.  Many claim it to be the best they’ve ever had.  Fricano’s has 5 locations in the area, my favorite being Fricano’s Too in downtown Holland.  The pizza is very thin, very greasy and very delicious.  There are only 5 toppings for the pizza: Italian Sausage, Pepperonis, Mushrooms, Green Peppers, and Anchovies.  These 5 toppings are all it takes for them to craft a delicious pizza!

Fricano’s Pizza is my favorite pizza in the area and also one of the best deals.  A pizza is the right size for most people although some will find that splitting one works out well. Pizza’s are ~$8 depending on how many toppings you want.  I favor pepperoni and sausage on mine!  Delicious!

The restaurant can be found on 174 South River Avenue, downtown Holland. Expect a wait if it’s a weekend night. Pizza is also available for takeout.

Where’s Tyler? Holland State Park

Holland State Park is a large beach/park on the shores of Lake Michigan.  The park has two campgrounds, one on the beach, and the other on Lake Macatawa.  The area is famous for “Big Red”, a lighthouse on the channel.  The beach is clean and has a concession stand.

I’ve spent many days relaxing in the sun at this beach.  It’s the closest beach to my house and where I spend most of my free days.  I’ll usually bring a book to read while laying in the sun and walk out on the pier every now and then to cool off and sometimes jump off into the lake.  For lunch, a short walk to Smitty’s Pronto Pups is a nice break; otherwise driving 5 minutes to Sluggo’s Pizza is always a great choice.

The beach is open year round and free parking is available just outside the beach, along the road.  To reserve a camping spot, check out the website.
