Where’s Tyler? Sherman Dairy Bar

Sherman’s Ice Cream began in 1916 and has flourished to this day.  Sherman’s specializes in making a large variety of hard-packed ice cream that tastes great while keeping prices low.  The ice cream is manufactured in South Haven, just off the highway.  Connected to the factory is the Sherman Dairy Bar, an ice cream shop that serves the freshest Sherman Ice Cream there is!  They offer around 50 flavors of ice cream and a couple flavors of soft serve yogurt during the peak season.

While you can purchase Sherman’s ice cream at any local grocery store, why not head on down to the source to enjoy a cone?  It’s much more fun to hop in the car and head on down to the Sherman Dairy Bar and grab a cone.  It’s very cheap and very, very tasty!

Sherman’s is open from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. Monday – Saturday and Sunday from noon – 11 p.m.

Where’s Tyler? Paddleboarding on Lake Mac

Last year my dad bought 3 long boards that looked a lot like surfboards.  He told us that they were stand up paddleboards, or SUP’s.  My brother and I were both baffled by the idea and wondered how standing on a board and paddling around a river or lake could be fun.  But after a few days of trying them out up at Torch Lake we were convinced that they were definitely worth the money.  Paddling down the many lakes and rivers in Northern Michigan was a blast and I spent days just exploring the rivers whenever the wind was calm enough.  Check out http://www.supsurfmag.com/ for more information about SUP.

I’ve been looking for a place around the area to rent paddleboards so that I can go when I’m not at my cottage and so that I could let others know how much fun it is and this summer while going to Holland State Park I saw a sign that read “We rent stand up paddleboards”.  It was too perfect, I pulled in and walked up to the shop, Macatawa Boat House, sure enough they rent stand up paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks by the hour or day.  The guy working was great to work with and I hopped on a paddleboard and tooled around on Lake Macatawa for a little while.

If you are interested in giving stand up paddleboarding a try, this is the only place in the area that rents them as far as I know. Otherwise, The Outpost in Holland sells many different brands and styles.

Where’s Tyler? Deerlick Creek Park

Deerlick Creek Park is a brand new park in South Haven.  For years the park had been private property that locals used as an access point to the lake.  A few years ago the owner of the land passed away and Cottage Home bought the land.  They planned to build 10 houses on the l0 acres and provide limited access for the public.  However, they instead donated $330,000 worth of land and the township purchased the rest of the land required for the park a year ago.  Just recently the park has been finished with new landscaping, restroom, and a freshly paved parking lot.  Without the support of many, many local businesses this park would not be. A big thanks goes out to all of those who helped.

The park is located a little ways south of the city at the end of 13th Avenue, right by Lake Michigan.  It is a small, very beautiful area.  A creek that is used for trout fishing runs through the middle of the beach and empties into Lake Michigan creating a unique beach.  It is never crowded with throngs of people like many beaches are during the hot days of summer, but instead is usually a quaint area where you can rest and relax in peace.

Stop by and check out the contributions of the community while relaxing in the sun!

Where’s Tyler? Captain Sundae

Captain Sundae has been a staple of a trip to Holland for my entire life.  As a kid, going to see family in Holland wasn’t complete without a stop at Captain Sundae and even today, it’s hard for me to drive by without stopping.  Captain Sundae makes their mark, not with a plethora of flavors, but their creativity with sundaes and toppings.  Their famous “Tommy Turtle” with caramel, hot fudge, pecans, and whipped cream is even a favorite of George Bush, who had one a few summers ago!

This is by far my favorite ice cream place along the lakeshore and I highly suggest that you stop by after a day on one of the many area beaches.  The ice cream is delicious and if in doubt, just order a “Tommy Turtle”.

Captain Sundae is located on Douglas Ave, just west of River Avenue.  They are open every day during the spring, summer and fall, but close for the winter.
