Where’s Tyler? Tello’s Bistro

Tello’s is a great restaurant located downtown South Haven.  The atmosphere is very romantic and inviting for a dinner for two or with friends.  Soft jazz music plays overhead while you enjoy the authentic Italian food, made with ingredients from local farmers.  There is an extensive wine list with many wines grown here in Michigan.

I’ve been to Tello’s a few times in the past few years, most recently after helping a friend move into his new place at Central Lofts in downtown South Haven.  We decided to go get dinner and chose Tello’s because of it’s nearby location and great food.  I was feeling adventurous and ordered rabbit for my meal. However, turned out that they were out of rabbit, so instead I ordered the rack of lamb.  The lamb was delicious and the minty pesto sauce on top was superb.  Service was great and the staff was very polite.  We didn’t have to wait for a table at all and the food came very quickly, which was nice.

Tello’s is located on Pheonix St. right next to Dyckman Park in downtown South Haven.  They are open Monday – Thursday 3 p.m. – 10 p.m. and Friday – Sunday 11:30 a.m. – 11 p.m.

Check out the website and make reservations at www.tellobistro.com.  If you are looking for a romantic dinner, or a casual dinner with friends, look no further than Tello’s!

Where’s Tyler? The Michigan Maritime Museum

The Michigan Maritime Museum is a complex in downtown South Haven, right on the harbor, that focuses on preserving the maritime history of the great lakes.  They have exhibits ranging from old canoes and motors to coast guard boats to artwork.  The museum even has a workshop where locals get together to build old-fashioned wooden canoes by hand.

The largest, and most interesting attraction that the museum offers for visitors is it’s tall ship, Friends Good Will.  The ship is a replica boat modeled after an actual boat that first sailed in 1811.  It is a magnificent sight to behold in the South Haven harbor, it just looks surreal, a tall, sailed, wooden ship sailing in between all of the new speedboats and seadoos.  The ship sails several times every day and tickets can be purchased at the museum. I suggest a sunset sail if it is a clear day.

I visited the museum for the first time ever a few weeks ago.  It truly does have some great exhibits.  Some of my favorites were the birch bark canoe, the tugboat that is docked on land and can be explored, and the Coast Guard Exhibit.  Inside the Coast Guard Exhibit there were a few boats but what intrigued me the most was a small cannon that was used to fire lines from a rescue boat to another boat that was in distress. It was very interesting. As I wandered from building to building for an hour or so, I had the privileges of watching Friends Good Will get ready and sail out for one of her daily sails in Lake Michigan.

The Michigan Maritime Museum hours are:

Memorial Day – Labor Day
Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm
Sunday 12pm – 5pm

Labor Day – Memorial Day
Friday – Sunday 10am – 5 pm

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3.50 for children.  The museum is located at 260 Dyckman Avenue at the bridge on the Black River Waterfront.

Where’s Tyler? Sherman Dairy Bar

Sherman’s Ice Cream began in 1916 and has flourished to this day.  Sherman’s specializes in making a large variety of hard-packed ice cream that tastes great while keeping prices low.  The ice cream is manufactured in South Haven, just off the highway.  Connected to the factory is the Sherman Dairy Bar, an ice cream shop that serves the freshest Sherman Ice Cream there is!  They offer around 50 flavors of ice cream and a couple flavors of soft serve yogurt during the peak season.

While you can purchase Sherman’s ice cream at any local grocery store, why not head on down to the source to enjoy a cone?  It’s much more fun to hop in the car and head on down to the Sherman Dairy Bar and grab a cone.  It’s very cheap and very, very tasty!

Sherman’s is open from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. Monday – Saturday and Sunday from noon – 11 p.m.

Where’s Tyler? Deerlick Creek Park

Deerlick Creek Park is a brand new park in South Haven.  For years the park had been private property that locals used as an access point to the lake.  A few years ago the owner of the land passed away and Cottage Home bought the land.  They planned to build 10 houses on the l0 acres and provide limited access for the public.  However, they instead donated $330,000 worth of land and the township purchased the rest of the land required for the park a year ago.  Just recently the park has been finished with new landscaping, restroom, and a freshly paved parking lot.  Without the support of many, many local businesses this park would not be. A big thanks goes out to all of those who helped.

The park is located a little ways south of the city at the end of 13th Avenue, right by Lake Michigan.  It is a small, very beautiful area.  A creek that is used for trout fishing runs through the middle of the beach and empties into Lake Michigan creating a unique beach.  It is never crowded with throngs of people like many beaches are during the hot days of summer, but instead is usually a quaint area where you can rest and relax in peace.

Stop by and check out the contributions of the community while relaxing in the sun!
